Player Bio | Stats

As the leadoff hitter, Dick McAuliffe made things go for the 1968 World Series champion Detroit Tigers. He had unusual power for a leadoff batter, hitting as many as twenty homers three times, and 197 in his career.

McAuliffe is one of the few players to be an All-Star at both shortstop and second base, earning two trips to the Midsummer Classic at each position. He ultimately played 971 games at second and 666 at short in his 16-year career.

In 1967, McAuliffe hit into only one double play, but it came at the most inopportune time. With the game-tying run at second base, McAuliffe hit into a double play in the bottom of the ninth of the final game of the season, ending the Tigers attempt to tie the Red Sox atop the standings.
