Player Bio | Stats

With ten full seasons under his belt entering 2016, Justin Verlander already ranks as one of the best pitchers to ever wear the uniform of the Detroit Tigers.

In 2006 the hard-throwing righty won 17 games and helped the surprising Tigers win the pennant. He became the third youngest man to start a World Series game that fall. For his fine debut season he was named Rookie of the Year in the American League.

The following year Verlander threw a no-hitter at Comerica Park, was named an All-Star for the first time, and won 18 games. He won at least 17 games in four of the next five season, getting stronger and more dominant.

Everything came together for Verlander in 2011 when he won 24 games, threw a secon-no-hitter, and earned both the Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards. His season ranks as one of the best by a pitcher in Detroit history.

Entering 2016, Verlander has something to prove after suffering through inconsistency and injury for two seasons. He rates in the top ten in most pitching categories for Detroit pitchers and has an excellent chance to become the all-time wins leader and strikeout leader in franchise history.

In the prime of his career, he was remarkably durable, pitching at least six innings in 63 consecutive starts from August 22, 2010 to July 26, 2012. Over that span, the tall right-hander won 40 games while losing only 12. His durability streak was stopped only because his start against the Red Sox in Boston was halted by rain after five innings. Thus, he lost the streak while pitching a complete game.

Verlander's postseason performances for the Tigers have been stellar. In both 2012 and 2013 he dominated the A's in four starts in the ALDS, winning three games. His victories included wins in Game Five each year, and he allowed only one earned run in 31 innings in those two series, striking out 43 batters.
